Dear Charmian,

I have been a political poster artist, campaign activist and writer.

At 65, I have suddenly found myself without direction and after some thought I have decided to go back to ceramics (tile making), of which I have done a little.

I live in Spain and at the moment I am looking at ways of linking my love of William de Morgan with the Islamic tradition of Spanish tiles — returning the designs to their owners!

I came to your site looking for information on Cuerda Seca, a technique I have used in the past but have lost touch with. Out of pages of cuerda seca designes, vases and tiles I was particularly interested in yours because the technique has not drowned the design, in fact quite the opposite, you have used Cuerda Seca almost like a pencil line. I like this.

I saw your work on your blog site and liked it and your approach to it. I looked for somewhere to make contact with you, couldn't find anywhere hence this 'comment'

When I previously used cuerda seca it was made by the guy I was working with, do you know how to make it or can you just buy it ready made?

My email address is fraka@arrakis.es.

Take Care,
Best Wishes,
Martin J Walker

Apologies for the long delay as I took a hiatus from art for health reasons.
The tip I can share with you is using needle point squeeze bottles and low fire black glaze or brown (or whatever color works for your pallette) . That will keep the lines clear. And you can hand paint the colored glazes in.
